It is what it is

As the late afternoon sun does it’s worst on the Cove’s tarmac, everything is silent.

No business, no tourism, no road raged arguments on the notorious bend at the bottom of the hill which usually kick off at around this time…

All you’ll hear is the squawks of the sea gulls and the crashing of the empty waves below.

If you look up you’ll see the clearest of skies, I’ve not seen a single cloud all day.

Is this a result of only a limited amount of abuse of which we usually insist of inflicting in high doses to our planet on a daily basis ?

Never will you find such solace on Sennen’s cove and probably never in our lifetimes will we experience this disturbed solitude that is going on around the world right now.

For a minute, let’s stop moaning about the economy. We might not be earning much but then again we ain’t spending much.

Appreciate what we have, for when this blows over, perhaps we can pay more attention to our fellow earthlings, this wonderful planet and the joy it supplies us with.

Can’t wait to see you all back at Smart Surf School

Love from the team x

Storm Refugees

The atrocities of the these big storms can mean for surf lesson cancellations as they render the surf conditions unsuitable for beginner surfers (as well as experts).

This is because surfing beaches receive big waves and strong winds that can disorganise the bay and create rip currents that can pull surfers out to sea, or ‘max out’ the beach so the waves are too big to navigate through.

That being said, big storms can generate enough swell to wrap around coastal corners to fire up unusual novelty waves which only break ‘once every blue moon’

Over the last couple of weeks, the locals have enjoyed exploring the south west’s nooks and crannies for these little sheltered corners that help us keep the stoke alive.

We’re pretty lucky to be situated at Lands End where we get a choice of coasts to chose from, to maximise our surfing options throughout the whole year.

While the Newlyn fisherman batten down the hatches, our coach, Sam Smart hops around in the harbour.

Down Time

It shouldn’t be called ‘down time’ because when the summer holidays finish, the Smart family holiday begins….

It’s been a busy summer and Smart Surf School operated as good as it ever has done. We are extremely proud of our team this year.

Featuring the whole Smart family team as well as secondary and primary school teachers turned surf coaches, Nick and Clare from New Zealand. These two have been an exceptional asset, adapting to our ways and settling in as part of our family. In addition, we were fortunate enough to acquire the ‘New’ twins, Huck and Woody New. Both young exceptional surfers, competing and champions at National level. For youngsters, the confidence exudes from them both. We also employed two of the Sennen lifeguards Tristan and Jacob – their water knowledge and beach safety skills have been a pivotal feature to the team (on their life guarding days off). Finally Tommy and Carlos. Local shredders learning the ropes and set to become permanent members of the team.

We need to mention that high level surfing ability means nothing if you don’t have the ability to communicate well to customers with humility and respect. Surfing ability aside, all of the above had exactly that…

Surfing ability aside, being a good surf coach is having the ability to communicate well, with humility and respect. Seb Smart enjoying some recent ‘down time’
